Hamilton Celebrates 1st Ever Haitian Flag Raising Ceremony

(Hamilton) – In honor of Haitian Flag Day, which is celebrated on May 18th and dates back to 1803 when Haitians recognize the creation of the country’s first flag by revolutionary Jean-Jacques Dessalines (the first ruler of an independent Haiti and considered one of the country’s founding-fathers), today Hamilton Township Mayor John Bencivengo joined with members of the local Haitian community to take part in the Township’s first ever Haitian Flag Raising Ceremony in Hamilton’s Kiser Farm Park. Members of the Haitian community enjoyed a sunny afternoon by holding a picnic in the park following the ceremony. In the attached photograph, Mayor Bencivengo holds a proclamation declaring Haitian Flag Raising Day in Hamilton Township with members of the local Haitian community (photograph courtesy of Hamilton Township).

Throughout the year, Hamilton Township displays the flags of several nations to honor the many ethnic groups that make up Hamilton and so greatly contribute to the community.
